There are so many things to do in Big Bear Lake! Located just 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Big Bear Lake is the premier four-season destination for relaxation and adventure in the San Bernardino Mountains. At an elevation of 7000’, it’s much cooler than it is closer to sea level. The average high temp in the month of August is only 79 degrees.

With more than 300 days of sunshine, 100’s of miles of forest trails, 22 miles of shoreline and two ski resorts with nearly 1000 skiable acres, there is plenty of outdoor fun to be had all year long. Big Bear Lake is Southern California’s local mountain lake escape.

Whether you crave soul-inspiring hikes along forest paths, horseback riding on trails that wind through the east end of Big Bear Valley or hitting the dirt on mountain bikes for alpine rides with spectacular views, all are prime choices for things to do in Big Bear during most seasons. For the adventurous spirit, lots of Big Bear off-roading trails are open year-round. The Gold Fever Trail is perfect for a beginner’s first off-road challenge and for the rugged 4x4 enthusiast there are a few black-diamond rated trails in Big Bear. Rock climbers have discovered the beautiful boulder outcroppings in the back country for some easy/moderate challenges. Most campgrounds in Big Bear are open Spring through Fall with a few outliers that are open all year.

Things to do in Winter in Big Bear Lake, CA
In the winter, SoCal ski and snowboard enthusiasts pour into Big Bear at the first sign of snow to ride and ski at Big Bear Mountain Resort. Bear Mountain is best known for its’ freestyle snowboarding park, while Snow Summit and the Adventure Academy attracts families and downhill skiers. Not a skier or snowboarder? You can have a full day of fun snow tubing or for a quieter alpine experience, head out to the forest to enjoy the snow-covered trails on snowshoes.

Reeling in everything from rainbow trout to largemouth bass and catfish, shore fishing in Big Bear is popular with anglers all year round. As soon as Big Bear Lake officially opens on April 1, boating and fishing are the top activities on the list of things to do Big Bear. If you have your own boat you can launch from the Public Launch Ramp or marinas or wait a couple of weeks for the fishing charters and pontoon rentals to start in mid-April.

Summer and Spring Activities in Big Bear Lake, CA
When the water is warmer, around Memorial Day, you can rent kayaks, canoes or paddleboards to get your fix on the lake. Summer thrill seekers can check out the wakeboarding lessons, parasailing adventure or jet-ski rentals available at the marinas.

Explore the forest and the history of Big Bear while you’re off-roading with Big Bear Jeep Experience, or get a fresh perspective when you see Big Bear Lake from the deck of the Big Bear Pirate Ship or the Miss Liberty Paddlewheel Tour.

Year-Round Things to do in Big Bear Village
In the heart of Big Bear Lake you’ll find a charming district known as The Village, which serves as the central hub for shopping, dining and entertainment. Check out some of the family friendly attractions in The Village like Mountain Room Escapes or the Bowling Barn for fun indoor entertainment.

Urban Adventure Quest offers a smartphone guided, walking scavenger hunt through The Village and is fun for the whole family. The Village is also home to the Big Bear Visitors Center where visitors can get maps, Adventure Passes and other information from local area experts. Many of the annual Big Bear Events are held in this area. There is plenty of free parking available throughout The Village.

Other Unmissable Things to Do in Big Bear…
Rescued bears, wolves and mountain lions steal the show when you visit the Big Bear Alpine Zoo. This zoo is a rescue and rehab facility where injured or imprinted animals are brought in and either treated and released back into the wild or given a home for life. If you’re a history buff, step back in time at the Big Bear History Museum to discover the rich and varied history of our mountain community.
