11 DAYS LATE $50,000 SHORT

June 20, 2014 | by Dan McKernan

The tagged trout worth $50,000 for Big Bear Lake's Annual Fishin' for $50K Trout Derby was reeled in by Kenny Tanaka of Thousand Oaks, Calif. on Thursday, June 19. Unfortunately Tanaka, who is 13 years of age, was 11 days too late to cash in for the big payout of $50,000.

The Fishin' for $50K event expired on June 8, 2014. The official rules state that the $50,000 tagged trout must be caught during official dates and times of the Fishin' for $50K Trout Derby, and presented to the tournament director with tag attached for claim verification.

"It was unfortunate the trout was caught after our trout derby. We would have loved to give the $50,000 to a lucky winner," said Big Bear Visitors Bureau Director of Operations Rebecca Hrabia. "This catch however does confirm that the $50,000 fish can be caught. It's just a matter of catching it on the right day."

Tanaka caught the fish while trolling on a charter fishing trip with Cantrell Guide Service. The fish was reeled in near Big Bear Dam just off of Garstin Island. The type of lure used was a Needlefish Red Magic lure.

"At first we didn't realize there was a tag on the fish when he reeled it in, because it was an unusual color that blended in with the fish" said Captain John Cantrell of Cantrell Guide Service. "It wasn't until someone on the boat pointed to the fish in the live well and asked me if that is some kind of a tag on the fish. I took a closer look and said 'by golly that is indeed a tag.'"

Tanaka did not win the big cash prize of $50,000. However, The Big Bear Visitors Bureau awarded Tanaka and his nephew Daniel Alemeda of Camarillo, Calif. who assisted Tanaka on the catch, with consolation prizes that included two passes for Action Segway Tours, two passes to the waterside at Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain, a case of Pautzke Fire Bait, a case of Clif Bars, and Big Bear promotional items.

Tanaka says he would like to enter into the Fishin’ for $50K Trout Derby for the first time next year. The Fishin' for $50K Trout Derby is set for June 6 and 7, 2015. Tanaka of course hopes to catch the tagged trout worth $50,000 during the actual event so he can claim the big money next time around.

Registration for next year's Fishin' for $50K Trout Derby is expected to begin in March 2015. For rules and regulations or to register for next year's Fishin' for $50K event including discounted entry with lodging or free entry with a pontoon boat rental visit or call 800-424-4232.
