Big Bear Oktoberfest History

In the year of 1969 - two German immigrants named Hans and Erika Bandows from New York City, moved to California with their two children and what little they had. They would eventually go on to purchase the Wolf Creek Lodge, originally named Wawona Lodge, after spending everything they had saved up.

After their first year owning the lodge and following an intense winter snow storm, the owners decided to celebrate with everyone by bringing their tradition to Big Bear Lake.

Once the days long preparations had been made and guests had been greeted, Hans began the first Oktoberfest in Big Bear Lake at 12 PM with a mallet and a cry "Ozphat Is!" marking the start of an exciting annual celebration!
