COVID-19 FAQs For Outdoor Recreation

As everyone is itching to get out and enjoy the warm weather, we ask that everyone keep in mind the importance of social distancing and safety precautions while traveling.

For businesses, restaurants, activities, and lodging to remain open in Big Bear Lake, it is of utmost importance that we have the cooperation of our Community, Businesses and Guests to ensure and continue the amazing efforts and progress we've made to minimize the effects of the COVID-19 disease.


Outdoor activity is beneficial both to your physical and mental health and besides that, it's just good fun! Here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions regarding Big Bear Lake's outdoor recreation:

Please carry face coverings at all times and wear them when interacting or in close contact with others. Maintain a 6 foot distance from those outside your immediate household at all times. Maintain proper hygiene and wash/sanitize your hands frequently.

1. Are trails open?

The San Bernardino National Forest trail system is open to hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, and off-roading. Not all trails permit all activities so be sure to abide by signage prohibiting certain uses. Our Valley's most popular trails can be found HERE. Further info on off-roading can be found HERE.

Wear a face covering if you encounter others on the trails and be sure to Leave No Trace and protect our environment!

2. Are public bathrooms open?

City public restrooms at Rotary Park and the Chamber of Commerce building (630 Bartlett Rd) are open.

Bathrooms are located at the Woodland Trail, Cougar Crest Trail, and Aspen Glen Picnic Area.

Parks & Recreation bathrooms are open at Meadow Park, Ski Beach, and Sugarloaf Park. Portable facilities are located at Miller Park, Erwin Park, The Ranch in Erwin Lake, and Dana Park in Fawnskin.

Carry a personal bottle of hand sanitizer to use after you use any restroom facility.

3. Is the lake open?

Closed for the winter season.

The lake is open to the public with some services available. Please contact marinas directly who have elected to open at this time. Lake Tours cannot be booked at this time.

Please refer to the Big Bear Municipal Water District for info on launching personal water craft.

Face coverings are required during any interactions at the Launch Ramp and marinas.

Swim Beach will not be open this Summer due to low water levels.

4. Can I rent a boat/kayak/SUP?

Water sports are closed for the winter season.

Please contact marinas directly who have elected to open at this time.

5. Is the lake open for fishing?

Shore fishing is permitted year-round.

If you're fishing along the shoreline, be sure to maintain a 6 foot distance between you (or your household members) and others.

6. Are campgrounds open?

Explore developed Big Bear campgrounds. Reservations can be made HERE, though some areas are first come first served. Read the Forest Service announcement HERE. A Campfire Permit is required for all.

One campground is permitted for one household unit.

7. Are tours and recreational activities operating?

Touring and outdoor recreation experiences are among Big Bear's most popular! Please refer to our Things To Do page.

8. Is Big Bear Mountain Resort open?

Please visit the BBMR website for information on Summit Bike Park as well as skiing and snowboarding at Snow Summit and Bear Mountain.
