Made to Move: Big Bear’s High-Altitude Playground
We invite you to explore Southern California’s only four-season destination for athletes, adventurers, and weekend warriors powered by Big Bear’s terrain, spirit, and community.
"Big Bear is an ideal location to train. The conditions are tough, but that’s exactly what makes it great.” Kim Rhode, Six-time Olympic medalist in skeet shooting

Winter Training Grounds
Big Bear is home to two premier ski resorts, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. Both resorts host competitive snow sports teams, the Snow Summit Race Team and the Team Bear freestyle team. Every winter, champions are built and trained on our home soil - or should we say snow? Big Bear athletes compete far and wide making a name for themselves at regional and national levels.
Discover alpine racing opportunities, freestyle terrain and more when you travel to Big Bear for SoCal's best winter training grounds.
Spring into a Fresh Challenge
Springtime in Big Bear is a time for new growth and fresh starts. Get ahead on your training regimen with trail running and mountain biking opportunities across the valley. Big Bear's earliest running events take place in April with Run Wild benefitting the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, and Spartan Trifecta Weekend plus the Memorial Day 5K both slated for May.
Summer, the Season to Conquer
June, July and August see the majority of Big Bear's side-splitting, high-altitude events. None are for the weak of heart! While summer temps in Big Bear are a welcome change from desert and metropolitan heat waves, the high altitude gives your training day and competition that extra spice!
Autumn Action in Big Bear
Autumn may signal the end of summer vacation, but in Big Bear the competition season is still going strong. From open water swim and paddle races at Lakefest, to the motocross MX Grand Prix, endurance races in the Kodiak Ultra Marathon and century mountain bike rides in the Grizzly 100, to obstacles races at Tough Mudder, and traditional calorie burners like the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot keep athletes moving well into the holiday season.
September, October and November may be the best competition season yet!
