Big Bear Lake: Southern Cal’s Running and Cycling Race Destination

Full Slate of Races Set to Challenge Athletes of All Abilities

Big Bear Lake, Calif. (April 23, 2018) -- Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, the small mountain town of Big Bear Lake has become a training destination for a wide swath of athletes. From boxers and MMA fighters to runners and cyclists, they come to enjoy the benefits of training at 7000 ft. Away from the stresses of the city, it’s an ideal place to train.

The altitude and rugged terrain also make Big Bear an ideal place to compete and this summer a full slate of events will invite athletes of all stripes to Big Bear Lake to challenge themselves. Additional information about the events below. Note: registration is now open (and will fill up) for several of the events below:

  • Spartan Race (May 19-20): The Big Bear installment of the preeminent national obstacle race series, Spartan Race Big Bear will challenge competitors with course designs that takes advantage of every bit of elevation change offered by Big Bear Mountain Resort. The weekend kicks off with an athlete dinner and concert on Friday night before athletes hit one of several courses over the next two days, including a Beast (12 miles/ 30-35 obstacles), Sprint (3 miles/ 20-25 obstacles) and several kids race courses.
  • Crafts N Cranks (July 28-29): Few things go together quite like beer and mountain biking. Crafts and Cranks, the annual craft beer tasting fest and mountain bike race, might be the perfect mix of both. Now in its third year, the event has cultivated a family atmosphere, with live music and a few carnival rides for good measure. It has quickly become one of the premier summer events in Big Bear.
  • Tour De Big Bear (Aug 4): Voted Southern California’s favorite road cycling ride, the Tour de Big Bear is the anchor event of the week-long Big Bear Cycling Festival. Offering several distances, ranging from 25 to 125 miles, the race treats participants to amazing scenery and world-class race support, including law enforcement at all major intersections and aid stations stocked with fuel to keep you going.
  • Spndx Stampede (Aug 5): Proving that fun and road cycling aren’t mutually exclusive, this is the event for cyclists looking to have a good time on the bike and off. With a course around 50 mi, it’s not going to kill you, and it probably won’t even make you stronger, but you sure will have a good time. Good food, top notch beverages, great company and good ride, what more could one ask for?
  • Kodiak 100 Ultra Trail Run (Aug 17-18): One of the most gruelling races in the country, the Kodiak 100 Trail Run sees challengers run 100 kilometers (with over 17,000 feet of climbing), hoping to claim one of ultra-running most respected titles. With a course record of 19 hours and 58 minutes, this is not an event for the faint of heart. “Shorter” is a relative term, but 50k and 50 mi races are also on the docket and provide an ideal challenge for marathoners looking to take the next step. If nothing else, soak in some inspiration as a spectator and watch the challengers as they cross the finish line having put their mind and bodies to the ultimate test.
  • Big Bear MTB Gran Fondo/ Grizzly 100 (Sept 29): The Big Bear Valley’s extensive network of single track trail has long made it the perfect venue to host a cross country mountain bike race and the Big Bear MTB Gran Fondo and Grizzly 100 make the most of it. Courses vary in length from 20k to the full Grizzly 100k, testing both weekend warriors and the most experienced competitors alike.
