SKI RESORT PUMPS ADRENALINE INTO SUMMER

May 04, 2015 | by Dan McKernan

Snow Summit Bike Park, Southern California's only lift-served mountain bike park, is set to open Friday, May 8, followed with a kick-off to summer celebration on Saturday, May 9. Snow Summit Bike Park will start the season with weekend-only (Fri-Sun) operations through June 19. After June 19, the bike park will open daily for the summer through Labor Day Weekend. The kick-off to summer celebration on May 9 will have a variety of vendors on hand hawking top brand mountain biking gear. Also on site is Red Bull, Go-Pro, Big Bear Visitors Bureau, Mammoth Mountain and more. A festive scene includes DJ Slipmatt spinning records at the base of Snow Summit, and riders can check out the latest gear from dozens of top brands on site. Fox's head team rider, Kirt Voreis will do laps through the park with anyone who's interested in a game of follow-the-leader.

Snow Summit officials also announced trail expansion plans at Snow Summit Bike Park are well underway, with construction on the much anticipated Going Green trail (beginner mountain bike trail) likely to begin before Memorial Day. Going Green trail, a key component in the long term vision for Snow Summit Bike Park that was laid out by the master trail builders at Gravity Logic, will run from the top of the all-mountain express lift to the base area. Going Green trail provides riders of all abilities a gentle 1,200 vertical foot descent. This trail is especially ideal for beginner to low-intermediate riders.

Mammoth Resorts, which recently acquired Snow Summit and Bear Mountain, is committed to expand Snow Summit Bike Park this summer with its new Going Green trail and continual efforts to maintain existing trails. Snow Summit also offers access to more than 60 miles of US Forest Service trails including the International Mountain Biking Association-built Skyline trail, which is considered by mountain biking industry standards as one of the best trails in the nation.

"This is a special place in the sport of mountain biking," said Dave Likins, COO for Mammoth Resorts, and oversees development and improvements at Big Bear Mountain Resorts. "We preserve the best aspects of riding in Big Bear while expanding terrain for beginners and core riders. We're committed to growing the sport by continuing to improve this world-class mountain biking destination."

For many mountain bikers the dirt at Big Bear is hallowed ground. With a history that spans back to the sport's earliest days, it's long been a place where the mountain biking elite sowed their oats. Legends like Brian Lopes and a number of current pros like Aaron Gwin got their start racing at Big Bear.

More advanced riders will find Snow Summit's 150 existing features ready on opening day. The Snow Summit trail crew, already hard at work, will keep things fresh throughout the summer changing up features and building some new ones. From berms and kickers to wooden features and wall rides, the crew's imagination adds to the natural terrain creating a world-class downhill experience.

Snow Summit Bike Park opens Friday, May 8 with weekend-only (Fri-Sun) operations through June 19. After June 19, the bike park will open daily for the summer through Labor Day Weekend. After September 7 Snow Summit Bike Park will return to weekend only operations to the beginning of the 2015-2016 winter season (weather permitting). Sunday to Friday hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Snow Summit Bike Park season passes are now available, starting at $299 for adults and $199 for children (ages 5-12).
